CSA Standards Testing & Certification

CSA certification

Electrical and electronic products sold in Canada must comply with safety standards recognized by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC). For many manufacturers, this means their product must obtain certification to the CSA standards to demonstrate that products meet Canadian safety requirements.

F2 Labs provides testing and certification for compliance to CSA standards, and guidance to help manufacturers successfully bring products to the Canadian market. Our experienced engineers help you navigate the requirements of the CSA standards.

Whether you are launching a new product, expanding to Canada, or preparing for production certification, F2 Labs supports your program from prototype testing through final approval.

What is “CSA” Certification?

Canadian certification, also referred to as “CSA” certification verifies that a product complies with safety standards developed by CSA Group (Canadian Standards Association). Certification typically involves third-party testing by a laboratory accredited by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC).

However, an important and often misunderstood point is:
CSA Group develops standards — but CSA is not the only organization that can certify products to those standards. The Standards Council of Canada (SCC)

Products bearing a CSA certification mark demonstrate compliance with requirements related to:

  • Electrical safety
  • Fire hazards
  • Grounding and insulation
  • Wiring methods
  • Enclosure design
  • Operator protection
  • Mechanical and environmental safety

Certifying your product to the CSA standards provides regulatory approval, consumer confidence, and market access in Canada.

For many electrical products, certification by a Standards Council of Canada (SCC) accredited body is required before the equipment can legally be connected to power or approved during inspection.

F2 Labs provides certification testing to CSA standards (Canadian Listings) and Canadian Field Labels so manufacturers can demonstrate their product’s compliance with CSA safety standards.

Through our partnership of over 20 years with an SCC accredited laboratory, we help manufacturers move efficiently from prototype to certified product with fewer redesigns, fewer delays, and a clear path to approval. As a third-party test lab, F2 Labs is able to offer more guidance/consulting than if we were the certifying body. When working directly with an SCC accredited lab, there is a conflict of interest so they will not offer troubleshooting, consulting, or assistance with any discrepancies that arise.

We also maintain the Listing File from beginning to end – we do not hand off your project at the end of the evaluation/test. It is our inspectors who perform the inspections in most cases. Any File revisions or new products would be handled directly with F2 Labs.

CSA Testing Services from F2 Labs

F2 Labs performs CSA standards testing and evaluation for electrical and electronic products to ensure compliance with Canadian safety requirements.

Our services include performing the following to the applicable CSA standard:

  • Preliminary Design Review
  • Construction Review
  • Product safety testing
  • Compliance documentation support
  • Certification services
  • Factory inspections
  • Ongoing compliance support

We partner with an SCC-accredited certification body, to deliver a complete path to certification to the CSA standards for Canada.

This allows manufacturers to work with a single experienced team from testing through certification approval.

CSA Standards Testing and Certification Support

Manufacturers typically pursue one of two certification paths depending on the product type, quantity, and production stage.

Canadian Field Label Evaluation (FLE)

A Canadian field evaluation is used when only a limited number of units need certification.

This process includes:

  • On-site or in-lab inspection of the equipment
  • Evaluation against applicable CSA standards
  • Issuance of a field evaluation report
  • Serialized certification labels for approved units

Field evaluations are commonly used for:

  • Custom equipment
  • One-off installations
  • Industrial machinery
  • Limited production equipment

Canadian Listing/Certification Evaluation

A Canadian Listing program is designed for products manufactured in ongoing production.

The process typically includes:

  1. Product testing and evaluation to applicable CSA standards
  2. Initial factory inspection to review manufacturing processes
  3. Quality system review to ensure consistent compliance
  4. Quarterly factory inspections to maintain certification

This certification allows manufacturers to apply a certification mark to all products that are produced under the Canadian Listing process.

If you’re not sure which path applies to your product, F2 Labs can help you confirm the standard, certification route, and documentation needed.

What to Expect From CSA Testing

While requirements vary by standard and product category, most programs include:

  1. Product Testing and Evaluation: A sample of your product and supporting documentation will be evaluated and tested to CSA safety standards.
  2. Initial Factory Inspection: Just prior to the issuance of your first certification, an Initial Factory Inspection will be performed.
  3. Quarterly Inspections: Follow-up inspections will be performed quarterly at each manufacturing site. During these visits, the inspector will review, among other things: production line tests, quality procedures and documentation, product revisions, required markings, etc.
  4. Fees for the Above Services: Fees per facility vary depending on the number of product categories being listed, and inspection fees are dependent upon the location of the facility.
  5. Annual Listing Fees: Annual listing fees can vary. Please contact us for a quote.

CSA Standards Testing FAQs

Does my product need to be certified to the CSA Standards to be sold in Canada?

Most electrical products must be certified by an SCC-accredited certification body before they can be legally connected to power or approved by inspectors in Canada.

Without certification, equipment may be rejected during customs inspection or prohibited from operation.

  • Canadian Field Label Evaluation applies to a limited number of units installed at a specific site.
  • Canadian Listing Certification applies to products manufactured in ongoing production and includes periodic factory inspections.

Manufacturers may seek out dual certification for products they plan to sell to the U.S. and Canadian markets, but this isn’t necessarily required. While certification to CSA standards is required for many products in Canada, the certification mark can also testify to the product’s safety compliance within the United States. F2 Labs can help you navigate North American product safety certifications.
