{"id":1584,"date":"2023-04-27T07:52:55","date_gmt":"2023-04-27T11:52:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/f2labs.com\/technotes\/?p=1584"},"modified":"2025-04-02T18:20:43","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T22:20:43","slug":"pacemakers-and-electric-cars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/f2labs.com\/technotes\/2023\/04\/27\/pacemakers-and-electric-cars\/","title":{"rendered":"Pacemakers and Electric Cars"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Over the past decade, we have seen an explosion of popularity with various green technologies, and at the forefront of that are electric vehicles and the charging stations that keep them going.\u00a0 A new study questioned whether individuals who wear pacemakers can safely operate an <a href=\"https:\/\/f2labs.com\/fcc-testing-certification\" title=\"FCC Certification Testing Lab for Electric Vehicle\">electric vehicle<\/a> or use a high-power charging station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study, performed by the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) in Barcelona, Spain, shows that yes, it is perfectly safe to use and operate these devices, assuming you don\u2019t place the charging cable directly over your pacemaker or stay near the charger for an extended period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe new high power charging stations for electric cars have the potential to create strong electromagnetic fields and cause electromagnetic interference in pacemakers and defibrillators, leading them to malfunction,\u201d said study author Carsten Lennerz, MD, of the German Heart Centre Munich. \u201cWe previously investigated the risk of electromagnetic interference with cardiac devices while driving electric cars and found&nbsp;that the largest electromagnetic field was located along the charging cable.&nbsp;This was the first study to examine the risk of electromagnetic interference in patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) while using high power chargers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study found that of the 561 total charges that participants were asked to perform as part of the program, no adverse events were caused by electromagnetic interference.&nbsp;
